Many professionals enjoy added the productivity afforded by working on multiple computer monitors at the office. Two screens, three screens – it’s the ultimate productivity setup.
But what happens when you’re working from home or when you’re on the road with just a laptop? Suddenly, it’s back to switching between browser tabs, slowing down your workflow by default.
That’s where the Microsoft Edge browser’s Split Screen feature comes in. It’s a simple idea with a big payoff: the ability to view two websites side by side in the same browser window. In other words, you can recreate that multi-screen experience without extra hardware.
How it Works
The feature is built right into Edge—no extensions, no hacks. On your toolbar, look for the Split Screen icon in the browser’s toolbar, shown here:
If you don’t see the icon, click the three dots at the top/right of your Edge browser to find it in the drop-down menu, then pin it to your toolbar.
Once you click, your current tab will immediately divide into two panes. From there, you can open a second page and interact with both at once. Resize them however you like. Compare a report on one side while drafting an email on the other. Watch a training video while following along in documentation. It’s multitasking made easy.
What About Chrome?
Google Chrome is working on a similar feature, but it’s still experimental. If you’re curious, here’s how to try it:
- Type chrome://flags in the address bar.
- Search for ‘split screen’ or ‘side panel split view.’
- Enable the flag and restart Chrome.
Just remember: it’s a work in progress so expect a few rough edges.
